What to Do Right Now, in Order

1. Shut off the water at the mains
Your water meter is usually near the front boundary of your property, in a small box at ground level. Turn the tap clockwise until it stops, or give a lever valve a quarter turn. This is the single most important thing you can do it stops more water entering the system.

2. Check for water near power points or the switchboard
If water is anywhere near electrical outlets, light fittings, or your switchboard, switch off power at the main switch but only if you can reach it safely without standing in water. If the switchboard itself is wet, don’t touch it. Stay clear and wait for help.

3. Drain the remaining water in your pipes
Turn on your cold taps (start with the lowest one in the house) and let them run dry. Flush the toilets. Switch off your hot water system, then drain the hot taps too this relieves pressure and slows the leak at the burst point.

4. Contain what you can
Buckets, towels, old blankets anything to soak up water and protect flooring. Move furniture, rugs, and electronics clear of the wet area. Open a window if it’s safe to help air circulate.

5. Photograph the damage before you clean up
Your insurer will very likely ask for this. A few quick photos now save a headache later.

6. Call us 0424 932 737 we respond 24/7 across Melbourne.

A Quick Melbourne-Specific Note

Depending on where you live, your water retailer is one of three: Greater Western Water (western suburbs and the CBD north of the Yarra), South East Water (bayside and southeastern suburbs), or Yarra Valley Water (northern and eastern suburbs). If the burst turns out to be in the street main rather than on your property, that’s your retailer’s responsibility to report, not something we can repair  we’ll always tell you clearly which one it is when we arrive.

Why This Happens (Briefly)

Most Melbourne bursts come down to ageing pipework, pressure spikes, or ground movement rather than the hard freezes seen overseas. If you want the full breakdown of causes and how we diagnose and repair them, that’s covered in detail on our burst pipe repair service page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Burst Pipe

Should I try to fix the pipe myself before the plumber arrives?
